Ellis Mazer is a soon-to-be father, a first year English teacher, and a directionless twenty-something entering the directionless 2000-somethings. Local and national tragedies feed Mr. Mazer's seventh graders the essay fodder that almost makes his job bearable. But when Spencer--trailer trash with more ring worms than friends--stops coming to school, Ellis discovers that he may be the only person who even notices, much less cares. What begins as a good-natured attempt to deliver some make-up work tumbles headlong into a quest deep into hillbilly noir in an attempt to verify that there is still some good in what appears to be a crumbling world.

Ellis is partnered with The Drew--full-time assistant principal, part-time private detective. He and The Drew explore the shadows and calluses of backwoods Arkansas to find that Spencer's disappearance is directly linked to the disappearance of a little girl. And it doesn't much feel like anyone wants the truth of what happened to either kid to emerge. Even Ellis is unsure of how much he cares. He only knows that in order to believe in his ability to be a husband or father, for some reason, he must find Spencer.

Among the swirling depravity of society, the crippling panic of impending parenthood, and the mounting scrap heap of seventh grade essays, one Arkansas town sees two kids go missing. Ellis Mazer only wants to find one of them. And if he can pull that off, he might not ever become a good teacher, but he might at least become a good person

Juggling Kittens Matt Coleman Books

Where have you been all my reading life, Matt Coleman? Juggling Kittens is a crime fiction noir tour-de-force. It portrays an otherwise safe rural/exurban Arkansas community with everyday evil that percolates beneath the surface like a pot of coffee brewed in a rundown trailer. The plot centers around middle-school teacher Ellis Mazer’s search for a missing student and is genuinely riveting. The school’s principal and amateur P.I., “The Drew,” provides comic relief and serves as Mazer’s sleuthing partner.

Juggling Kittens is genuinely hard to put down and the prose is well-written. But what I loved most was the author’s slightly dark, emotionally insightful, and, always witty, voice. Coleman could publish his shopping list and I would enjoy reading it. Can’t wait for his next book!

Juggling Kittens Matt Coleman Books Reviews

Juggling Kittens is a deliciously dark peek into rural America layered with quirky, interesting characters that glide, skid, or crash through the realities life's handed them. Original & clever--a literary treasure of a crime novel. Can't wait to read his next novel.
How can a silly title hide an unexpected masterpiece? This book is worth reading.
A very compelling novel. The intrigue captures you early, and this book becomes a must finish, to see where the story goes.
This is easily one of the best crime novels I have read in the past few years. It is very difficult to categorize. Crime novel seems like an oversimplification. It is at times comedy, at times coming-of-age, and at times a mystery. The plot of the novel revolves around a first-year teacher named Ellis Mazer. When he discovers that one of his students has gone missing, Mazer embarks on a quest to find him. This quest evolves into a bit of a buddy comedy, as he enlists the help of his principal and want-to-be private detective, The Drew. The mystery ends up weaving in and out of the grittiest back roads of rural Arkansas. Along the way, Mazer is forced to come to grips with his disdain for society and his fears of growing up. There is plenty of social commentary mixed in, but the author never pushes it into your face. All in all, it ends up being a very neutral (most of the time) examination of small town America. There are several tongue-in-cheek references to noir cliches tossed about in pretty clever ways. There are twists, turns, laughs, gut punches. Amazing writing. What I believe would be called an accomplished debut.
Barry Hannah, Larry Brown, Daniel Woodrell, Ron Rash, Tom Franklin, Brad Watson, and William Gay. Is their genre Southern Gothic? I don't know. Whatever it is, this new book by Matt Coleman fits the bill. It's a first novel, so the grit and polish is not quite there yet, but what *is* there is impressive. Well worth the read. By the way, no kittens were harmed in the writing of this book. 😁 The title refers to what it is like to teach 13 year olds. Remember this writer's name.
This was a riveting story for me. I read it impatiently, as the plot dragged me through the town and the lives of the characters, leaving my emotions on edge. I finished the book with mixed feelings of the justice/injustice of everything that happened in the story. Loss of a star for a bit of kitch and cliche, but based in story line, forgivable. Still feeling edgy after finishing the book yesterday.
Well-written, gripping suspense story with fully developed characters and a plot with which I was wholly immersed. Descriptive phrases like 'the tangible scent of hormones smelling like pancakes' and 'middle-schoolers juggled liked kittens in the air' made for a most memorable read. Book had the requisite humor I find prominently in five star reads given passages like "My fear of whatever was coming in that truck paled in comparison to my fear of returning without pickles [for my pregnant wife]" and "The Drew had a twelve-year-old pickup truck he called Yoda. It should have been Yota-it was named for the remaining letters of Toyota on the tailgate- but that wouldn't have been as good." Had plenty of twists and turns to keep me on my toes and a finish leaving me both pleased and in agony (situation where you wished something might have turned out different). Excellent book for being a debut novel and hoping this author continues to write!
